Grade Definition

MS 64 is the contraction for the denotation "Mint State Grade 64". This grade is part of the Sheldon coin grading scale, which was invented by W.H. Sheldon in 1949. He devised this system to more accurately describe the condition of U.S. Large Cents, of which he was an avid collector. His work was adapted to grade all U.S. coinage, and is widely used today by the most reputable coin grading services including PCGS and NGC. These are the top two independent coin grading firms in the United States, and ITM Trading will only deal in graded coins if they are marked "PCGS" or "NGC".

Specifics of the Grade

A $2 1/2 Liberty gold coin in MS 64 will be pleasing to eye, and scuffs or scratches will be smaller or less conspicuous than an example of the same coin in a lower grade. Any defects in the coin that occurred during the minting process will probably not be visible to the naked eye, but will require a low magnification and a trained eye to detect. A $2 1/2 Liberty in MS 64 will have a golden sheen to it more brilliant and uniform than it's lower graded counterparts as well.
